We all experience disappointments. The question is HOW we deal with life’s inevitable “setbacks.” Let’s explore this key to having a fulfilled life and business.
One of our students in our Holistic Coaching and Healing/Coaching Telecourse, Emma, was disappointed when she was not selected for a job for which she had applied.
It had actually triggered a rash. To deal with her disappointment, she used the Reality Shift with EFT Process. Emma uncovered a sense of worthlessness underlying her disappointment.
In combination with EFT to clear the block, she received the soulful insight, “Your skills have served you well. You may be using them in a different form in the future. You’re just where you need to be.”
FOUR SOULFUL PERSPECTIVES
To follow up on Emma’s process, we can suggest the following four perspectives to handle things not turning out as desired:
1. What is this situation teaching you?
2. Trust that another opportunity is waiting.
3. You are learning patience and perseverance.
4. Detach from the outcome. View things from the bigger picture, the view that your soul – the witness – perceives.
For Emma, she sensed that this job was probably not quite right for her at this stage in her life. Her work may be elsewhere, more in line with her gifts, passions and goals.
As a note, a few days after the process her 2-month old rash had nearly disappeared.
TODAY’S SETBACK LEADS TO TOMORROW’S SUCCESS
Many times in life, you can’t understand why something isn’t working, in spite of your efforts. For years we wanted to sell our house in Sacramento and move to an area we desired. Once the timing was right, our house sold immediately.
This experience helped us benefit from the four perspectives above. When our house didn’t sell, we had to trust that another opportunity would come.
We persevered and stretched our patience. We knew this was somehow part of the bigger plan for our life. It taught us to go deeper into following our soul and spirit.
By the way, when we did tell our house we moved to our current location, which we love – and really appreciate.
Dealing with stress and setbacks makes us more resilient and able to live life more fully.

Hi Drs. Phil & Jane,
Thanks for this post. It brings up lots of thoughts, one of which is how often we make ourselves miserable believing things should be a way they are not. Down here in the South we call that “shoulding all over yourself” (have to say it aloud for full effect).
I wonder also about the power of perspective versus the myopia of the moment (what you call soul witness). And certainly there is the issue of faith or trust – believing that things will in fact work out. I don’t know that a lot of people have that going for them right now. Times are tough.
I’m looking forward to part 2.
Thanks Samantha for your insights.
When I get into overwhelm, I try to slow down and breathe. Collect myself.
That’s also why connecting with your larger purpose and goals is so important. They are a compass to keep you on track.
It’s good to have some meaningful personal affirmations to reference in those confusing times, too. Such as “what am I learning now?” “It’s working out and I am still succeeding. This is my success path.”
To your enlightened success,
Phillip Mountrose
